Today I stepped away from sketching to try something new.  I’ve seen a lot of work lately that uses a regular photo and with a little color, texture, and blending, end up with a pretty fabulous piece of art.  I thought I would give it a try, so I uploaded a photo I found of a grackle.

I didn’t want to use the background in the image as the browns and tans did nothing to bring out the gorgeous colors of the bird.  Working with a separate canvas I pulled the colors of the bird and started adding some texture.  After some blending here, highlighting and smudging there, this is the end result.  I’m loving it.

I wanted to do more than just erase the background.  If I did, then all I would have is a stark photo of the grackle.  They might be fine.  In fact, with the bird having so many colors, having a dark background might have been pretty.  It’s just not the affect I was going for.

I wanted to soften the edges a little and have the bird, textures and colors blend together.  I know I need to work on my technique a little, but I was too excited to wait.  I just had to post about it.  What do you think?
