Yoga. What’s The Big Deal?

I’ve belonged to Lifetime Fitness (I call the club) for four months now and have mainly stuck to my personal training sessions twice a week with some aquatics thrown in. I’ve tried a surrender yoga class which involves stretching poses, mainly sitting or lying down. That was fine and felt good, but I knew it wasn’t a real workout. The club offers many other types of yoga from beginner to advanced classes with some hot yoga thrown in. Um, no thank you on that one.

During my last massage session, (did I mention Lifetime is not just a gym?) my therapist suggested I try the Root Yoga class. It has basic yoga poses and offers more than just stretching. The little blurb about the class is “Tune in to your body and breath as you learn to mindfully engage your muscles to support your body with integrity.” Sounded good to me, so I gave it a shot.

During the hour-long class, I moved through cat and cow poses. I posed like a warrior, I lunged, I downward dogged, and posed like a child. I reached for the sky and folded my body in half. I planked and stretched and balanced and pointed my toes. And I sweated, all while trying to remember to breathe.

Being new to yoga, what I noticed was that during the height of the class, movement was fluid and nonstop. Up and down and facing this way then that way. Body twisting in all different directions, that by the time we came back down and began to relax into ourselves, I was hooked. I loved it. I lost my balance a few times and other times I had no idea what I was supposed to do, but I figured it out, and I know each time I go, it will become easier to follow along. I’m looking forward to next week.

Maybe one day I’ll even try hot yoga. Yeah… still no.
